Jarryd Hayne, the former NRL star, has announced his return to rugby league by signing a one-year contract with the Wentworthville Magpies, the Parramatta Eels’ feeder club, for the 2025 season. At 36, Hayne’s comeback is motivated by his desire for his children to witness his on-field performances, as his eldest daughter was a toddler during his last game in 2018.
Hayne’s contract is with the Wentworthville Magpies, who compete in the Ron Massey Cup, a semi-professional rugby league competition in New South Wales. His first match is scheduled for March 15 against Ryde-Eastwood at Ringrose Park. In addition to playing, Hayne will assist with coaching and mentoring junior players at the club.
His return follows the quashing of his sexual assault convictions by the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal, which led to his release from prison. Since then, Hayne has expressed a strong desire to return to rugby league, participating in events like the 2025 Nines Premier League trophy
However, Hayne’s comeback has encountered challenges, including a hamstring injury that led to his withdrawal from the opening games of the Nines Premier League carnival on the Gold Coast. Despite this setback, he remains committed to returning to the field with the Wentworthville Magpies
