Manchester United risk losing their £900 million partnership with Adidas if they face relegation from the Premier League.
Currently positioned 14th in the league, United have managed only two top-flight victories since Ruben Amorim took over as manager in November. The Portuguese coach has struggled to achieve consistent results while trying to instill his strategies in an underperforming team.
When questioned about Manchester United’s relegation concerns following their loss to Newcastle, Ruben Amorim admitted: “I think it is a possibility. We need to be honest with our fans.”
Speaking at a press conference, the United manager added, “We have to acknowledge where we stand. I believe people are tired of hearing excuses at this club. Sometimes I bring up relegation because our club needs a wake-up call.
Manchester United sit seven points above Ipswich Town in 18th place, but Ruben Amorim’s remarks provide little assurance that the club won’t be pulled into the relegation battle during the second half of the season.
If the worst-case scenario unfolds, Adidas reportedly holds the right to terminate their £90m-per-year agreement, according to The Telegraph. Under the terms of the 10-year contract, the German sportswear giant would need to give just one full season’s notice if United were relegated to the Championship.
Alternatively, Adidas could opt to reduce payments for 12 months, slashing the fee to £45m—a significant blow to United’s finances.
