**Nathan Cleary ❤: “When I first met Mary…” *

When I first met Mary, I’ll admit—she wasn’t what I had imagined. At the time, my head was completely wrapped up in footy. My days were a blur of training, games, recovery, and repeat. I wasn’t looking for anything beyond that, and definitely not a relationship. But Mary was different. She had this spark about her—an energy that stood out in any room. She was confident, passionate, and didn’t shy away from saying what was on her mind. I remember being both intrigued and a little thrown off by her at first.

What struck me most was how little she cared about who I was on the field. She wasn’t starstruck, didn’t ask for a photo, and didn’t treat me like “Nathan Cleary the player.” To her, I was just Nathan. And that was refreshing. Our conversations weren’t about the game, stats, or the media. They were about life, family, values—things that reminded me of what mattered most. I hadn’t realized how much I’d needed that until she gave it to me.

Mary challenged me in ways no one else had. She asked the tough questions, didn’t let me hide behind short answers, and called me out when I wasn’t being real. At first, I wasn’t sure how to take it. I was used to people either agreeing with me or trying to impress me. But she did neither—and that’s what pulled me in. There was no pretending with her. And over time, that honesty built something real between us.

Being with Mary has made me a better version of myself—not just as a player, but as a man. She keeps me grounded when the highs of footy start to cloud my vision, and she lifts me when the lows start to get too heavy. She’s become my balance, my teammate off the field.

Love wasn’t something I planned for, but it found me anyway—in the form of a woman who was bold enough to challenge me and kind enough to understand me. I’m grateful every day for that moment our paths crossed. Life isn’t always predictable, but sometimes, the unexpected turns out to be exactly what you needed. Mary is proof of that.
