On Tuesday, Jerry Jones addressed the Dallas Cowboys’ decision to release running back Ezekiel Elliott ahead of the team’s season finale.
Reports suggest that Elliott had requested his release to explore opportunities with a playoff-contending team once he cleared waivers. The Cowboys honoured his request, officially parting ways with the veteran running back.
Jones confirmed the move in a statement shared on the Cowboys’ official website.
“Out of respect and gratitude for Zeke, and to give him the chance to pursue potential playoff opportunities, we have decided to release him from the Cowboys roster today,” Jones stated.
“As I’ve said before, Zeke’s legacy as one of the all-time greats to wear the Star on his helmet is secure. His contributions are forever part of our history and record books. We are grateful for him, we love him, and we wish him nothing but success.”
After spending the 2023 season with the New England Patriots, Elliott rejoined the Cowboys on a one-year contract this offseason. He served as a backup to starting running back Rico Dowdle, though he did lead the team in rushing touchdowns. However, that milestone was dampened by the Cowboys’ league-worst total of just five rushing touchdowns through Week 17.
In 15 games this season, Elliott recorded 226 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 74 carries—marking the lowest stats of his career in each category.
