Ohio State University is reportedly finalizing a deal to hire Matt Patricia as its new defensive coordinator, succeeding Jim Knowles, who departed for Penn State.

Patricia, 50, has a distinguished coaching career, notably with the New England Patriots, where he served as defensive coordinator from 2012 to 2017, contributing to three Super Bowl victories. He later became head coach of the Detroit Lions from 2018 to 2020, compiling a 13-29-1 record. In 2023, Patricia worked as a senior defensive assistant for the Philadelphia Eagles.

At Ohio State, Patricia inherits a defense that led the nation in 2024, allowing just 251.1 yards and 12.2 points per game. The Buckeyes concluded the season with a 14-2 record, culminating in a 34-23 victory over Notre Dame in the national championship game.

Patricia’s extensive NFL experience and defensive expertise are expected to bolster Ohio State’s defensive unit as they aim to maintain their elite status in college football
