This accolade, bestowed upon him in May 2023, marks his fourth receipt of the prestigious title, with previous honors in 2011, 2013, and 2011
Under Sanderson’s visionary leadership, the Nittany Lions clinched their 11th NCAA team title in 2023, dominating the championships with a 55-point lead over Iowa. The team showcased exceptional talent, sending five wrestlers to the NCAA finals. Notably, Carter Starocci and Aaron Brooks secured their third national championships, while Roman Bravo-Young, Levi Haines, and Greg Kerkvliet earned runner-up positions.
Sanderson’s coaching journey has been marked by a series of remarkable achievements. In December 2024, he achieved his 250th career win when Penn State triumphed over Wyoming. This milestone underscores his enduring commitment and success in collegiate wrestling. Additionally, in March 2024, Penn State secured the Big Ten Wrestling Championship, further cementing Sanderson’s legacy as a transformative figure in the sport.
Beyond the collegiate arena, Sanderson’s influence extends to international wrestling. In 2012, he was honored with the Terry McCann Award as USA Wrestling’s Freestyle Coach of the Year, recognizing his contributions to freestyle wrestling.
