Wakefield Trinity have made a significant acquisition by securing the services of Australian hooker Tyson Smoothy from the Brisbane Broncos. The 25-year-old has agreed to a three-year contract that will see him join the Super League club for the 2026 season, extending through to the end of 2028.
Smoothy, born in Toowoomba, Queensland, began his NRL career with the Melbourne Storm in 2021, making his debut in Round 1 of that season. He later moved to the Brisbane Broncos in 2023, where he has since made 31 appearances. Notably, he played in the 2023 NRL Grand Final, coming off the bench in a narrow loss to the Penrith Panthers.
Expressing enthusiasm about the move, Smoothy stated, “My young family and I are really excited to begin a new chapter with Wakefield Trinity next season.” He acknowledged the positive reputation of the club and its fans in the Super League, adding, “We’ve heard great things about the club, and the fans in the English Super League.” He also reflected fondly on his time with the Broncos, saying, “I have loved my time with the Broncos here in Australia, and still have a big year ahead, but we’re looking forward to heading over at the end of the year.”
Trinity’s Recruitment Manager, Ste Mills, hailed the signing as a major milestone for the club, stating, “Managing to get Tyson’s signature is a huge coup for Wakefield Trinity.” He emphasized that securing a regular NRL player entering his prime demonstrates the club’s direction and collective ambition. Mills highlighted Smoothy’s big-game experience and leadership qualities as valuable assets that will elevate the team’s performance.
This strategic signing underscores Wakefield Trinity’s commitment to strengthening their squad ahead of their Super League campaign. Smoothy’s experience in the NRL and his leadership on the field are expected to make a significant impact, contributing to the club’s aspirations for success in the upcoming seasons.
