The Dallas Cowboys’ offense has struggled to resemble the high-scoring unit it was last season, plagued by turnovers and poor red-zone performance. Mike McCarthy’s team has faced a challenging year, compounded by injuries to key players in the second half, which only added to the early-season struggles when Dak Prescott was healthy. As the season finale against the Washington Commanders approaches, offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer reflected on what he wishes had gone differently.
“For me, the turnovers stand out the most,” Schottenheimer admitted. “You can’t win consistently when you’re turning the ball over. We know we haven’t done a good enough job coaching that, and that’s on all of us. Heading into the game against the Eagles, we felt good about our chances, but the momentum swung hard against us because of the turnovers.”
The Cowboys have turned the ball over 28 times across 16 games this season, ranking as the fifth-worst team in the league in this category. A staggering nine of those turnovers occurred in their two matchups against the Philadelphia Eagles. Additionally, the offense has committed multiple turnovers in half of their games—a recipe for disaster in the NFL.
While it’s a tough pill to swallow, Schottenheimer’s willingness to take responsibility for the team’s shortcomings is notable. He acknowledged that the coaching staff, including himself, could have done more to address the turnover issue. Unfortunately, the Cowboys have paid a steep price for these mistakes, and the season has been one to forget for their offense.
In Week 17 against the Eagles, the Cowboys’ four costly turnovers proved to be their undoing, leading directly to 24 of Philadelphia’s 41 points. These mistakes highlighted a critical weakness that must be addressed moving forward.
With the futures of many coaches uncertain, it’s clear that regardless of who is on the side-lines at The Star in 2025, protecting the football must become a top priority for the team.
