Amad Diallo netted a dramatic 90th-minute winner as Manchester United completed a sensational late turnaround to defeat Manchester City 2-1 in a thrilling Premier League encounter.
Four-time reigning champions City had taken a 1-0 lead in the Manchester derby, which they held until the 88th minute at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
However, Bruno Fernandes equalized from the penalty spot, and Diallo sealed the victory by skillfully chipping the ball past Ederson from a tight angle following a pinpoint pass from Lisandro Martinez.
City fans voiced their discontent at the final whistle as their team’s poor run continued, with just one win and eight defeats in their last 11 matches.
The win was a significant milestone for United’s new head coach, Ruben Amorim, who previously guided Sporting Lisbon to a commanding 4-1 victory over City during his tenure in November.
United had looked set for a third consecutive league defeat after Josko Gvardiol’s towering header gave City the lead in the 36th minute. Fernandes missed a clear chance when through on goal in the second half, and United struggled to create opportunities against a City side that rarely threatened to double their advantage.
The dramatic finale began when Diallo capitalized on a sloppy back pass by Matheus Nunes. Nunes brought down the United forward in the box, prompting referee Anthony Taylor to award a penalty. Fernandes confidently converted, sending Ederson the wrong way.
Minutes later, Diallo latched onto Martinez’s long pass, cleverly flicked the ball around the City goalkeeper, and slotted it home to complete the comeback.
United climbed to 12th in the standings, five points adrift of fifth-placed City.
