Jarryd Hayne, the former Parramatta Eels star, has confirmed his return to rugby league by signing a one-year contract with the Wentworthville Magpies, the Eels’ feeder team. This agreement allows Hayne to play in the Ron Massey Cup, a semi-professional competition, starting March 15, 2025.
The 36-year-old, who last played in the NRL in 2018, has been training with the Magpies and is set to make his debut on March 15. In addition to playing, Hayne will assist in coaching and mentoring the club’s junior players.
Wentworthville Magpies’ junior rugby league president, Elias Kassab, expressed support for Hayne’s return, emphasizing the importance of second chances in the sport. Kassab stated, “We are willing to give anyone a second chance so long as they are sincere, and Jarryd has been nothing but sincere and honest about things.”
Hayne’s return to rugby league follows a period of legal challenges, including a conviction for sexual assault that was later quashed. His comeback has been met with mixed reactions, with some fans expressing skepticism about his return to the NRL.
While Hayne’s return to the NRL with the Parramatta Eels has been speculated, there is no official confirmation of this move as of now. His focus remains on his commitment to the Wentworthville Magpies and his role in developing young talent within the club
