Ezra Mam, the Brisbane Broncos’ five-eighth, has publicly expressed deep regret over his involvement in a car accident on October 18, 2024, which resulted in injuries to an Uber driver and his passengers. Driving under the influence of cocaine and without a valid license, Mam’s actions have led to significant legal and personal repercussions.
In a recent statement, Mam explained the delay in reaching out to the victims, stating, “Leading up to the court case for legal reasons I wasn’t able to reach out to the victims, which was on my mind throughout the whole process.” He emphasized that once the legal proceedings concluded, he immediately contacted the victims to express his apologies and seek a personal meeting. Mam added, “Once the court case was settled I reached out that day. I also wanted to show how sorry I was in person.”
The incident has not only affected the victims but also Mam’s career. He was fined $850 and disqualified from driving for six months. Additionally, the National Rugby League (NRL) suspended him until round 10 and imposed a $120,000 fine, shared between the NRL and the Brisbane Broncos.
Currently, Mam faces potential personal legal action. Uber driver Marcel Van Den Camp has initiated proceedings against Mam’s third-party insurer, seeking compensation for injuries and income loss, including a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Mam acknowledged the possibility of further legal challenges, stating, “When all that stuff happens … we will deal with it when it comes around.”
Despite these challenges, Mam is committed to personal growth and rehabilitation. He has been attending a rehabilitation facility and is working weekly as a carpenter. Reflecting on his rehabilitation experience, Mam shared, “There was a lot of emotions going through my head. I had to keep quiet about it and wasn’t able to express myself and how sorry I was. I’ve done a lot of work on myself and that is one thing I am proud of.”
Mam concluded his statement by reiterating his remorse and dedication to becoming a better individual, stating, “I am truly sorry and I regret what I did. I remind myself every day that I was in the wrong but right now I am looking forward to getting on the right path and being a positive role model for future generations.”
