Jarryd Hayne, the former NRL star, has announced his return to rugby league by signing a one-year contract with the Wentworthville Magpies, a feeder team for the Parramatta Eels, to play in the Ron Massey Cup during the 2025 season.
At 36, Hayne’s comeback is motivated by a desire for his children to witness his on-field performances. His eldest daughter was a toddler during his last match in 2018, and his youngest was not yet born. In a social media post, Hayne expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play again, emphasizing the importance of playing in front of his children.
Hayne’s return follows a significant hiatus from professional rugby league, during which he faced legal challenges, including a conviction on sexual assault charges that was later quashed by the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal. His commitment to the sport and personal growth has been acknowledged by the Wentworthville Magpies, who have welcomed him back with open arms. Club president Elias Kassab stated that Hayne is “a different person now” and expressed confidence in his sincerity and dedication to positively contributing to the game.
